We absolutely love 3D Printing. It’s a fun, creative hobby that lets you express yourself via colors, shapes, characters, landmarks, cartoon characters, and more. We started our 3D Printing adventures when Jonathan (then a High School Sophomore) told Matt (then a really young forty-something dude) that he can 3D Print a GoPro camera housing for his FPV Quadcopters (sorta like drones but cooler).
Fast forward 3+ years, we have owned 4 different FDM 3D printers. FDM or Fused Deposition Modeling takes a spool of filament, think of a spool of string, but the string is plastic, heats it up, and deposits it layer by later, millimeter by millimeter, to go from one dot of plastic to an entire … well, anything you can dream of. Filament can be made of PLA, which is somewhat brittle and not really meant for impact, to PETG which is a slightly stronger material though more difficult to work with, to Nylon and PEEK which are much more durable, but come with some drawbacks.
Anyway – right before Christmas 2019, Matt decided he needed a new toy. Jonathan was off at college, and using their 3D Printers, and Matt hadn’t printed much in over 5 months. Resin printers, which are much higher “resolution” than FDM printers were coming down in price, and he wanted to give one a go. He dropped $250 on an Elegoo Mars Resin printer, and within 2 hours of setting it up, was insanely addicted to it.
The level of detail on these prints is just awesome. This Betta Fish design by Kim Bourrie can be found on MyMiniFactory. It was printed in Elegoo Clear Red resin. It’s just one of the fun prints we’ve gotten ourselves involved with lately. We’ve also printed Mando from The Mandalorian, Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures, and more!
